This book covers the physics, technology and device operation of photonic devices using exclusively silicon and related alloys. It comprises twelve chapters starting with an introductory chapter explaining the role of silicon in photonics and its advantages and disadvantages and a second chapter which discusses the properties of silicon and its heterostructures. Subsequent chapters will include the principles of active photonic devices, light emitters in Si, Si light modulators, Si photodetectors, a brief introduction of guided lightwaves, the principle of planar waveguide devices, waveguides for DWDM systems, planar lightwave circuits, photonic band gap and microphotonics, and Raman lasers and other nonlinear effects.
